Question 1

What do scratch-off odds actually mean?

Accepted Answer

When a game says "overall odds 1 in 4.5," it means that roughly 1 in every 4.5 tickets is a winner of any prize, including break-even prizes like winning your money back. The odds of winning larger prizes are much longer. Our rankings go beyond overall odds to show you the expected return on every dollar spent.

Question 2

What is the Return Rate?

Accepted Answer

The return rate measures how much money you'd get back, on average, for every dollar you spend on a ticket. A rate of 72¢ means you'd expect to get back 72 cents per dollar spent. Higher rates mean a better deal. We calculate rates using current prize availability, not the original print run.

Question 3

Does a higher ticket price mean better odds?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. While higher-priced tickets often have better overall odds and higher return rates, there are frequently $5 or $10 games that outperform $30 games. Our rankings compare games within and across price points so you can find the best value at any budget.

Question 4

Why does prize availability matter?

Accepted Answer

State lotteries continue selling tickets even after top prizes are claimed. A game that launched with great odds might now be a bad deal if most of the big prizes are gone. We track remaining prizes daily and recalculate each game's return rate based on what's actually still available.

Question 5

Are the remaining prize counts exact?

Accepted Answer

They are as exact as the state's own reporting. Prizes above a certain amount have to be claimed at a lottery office rather than at the store, so there is a gap between someone winning a prize and the state reporting it claimed. Remaining-prize counts, and the rates built on them, can run slightly generous as a result. The useful part is that the error only runs one way: if a game shows its top prizes gone, they are gone.

Question 6

Which states do you cover?

Accepted Answer

36 states and counting. Visit our States page to see the full list.

Question 7

How often is the data updated?

Accepted Answer

Data is collected directly from official state lottery websites. All 36 states are scraped in a single overnight run, early morning Pacific time. How often the numbers actually change is up to each lottery. Guests see data from two months ago. All registered accounts, including the Free plan, get real-time access.

Question 8

What does the Score mean?

Accepted Answer

Our composite ranking weighs multiple factors including current return rate, probability of large wins, game health, and other proprietary signals. Rankings are normalized within each price tier and state, so a #1 rank means the best game at that price point. Paid members can choose from four ranking modes tailored to different goals.

Question 9

Is there a mobile app?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Serious Scratchers is available as a web app that works on any device, and we also offer native iOS and Android apps through Capacitor. The web app is fully responsive and can be installed as a PWA on your home screen.

Question 10

Can I track my ticket purchases?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The My Ledger feature lets you log every scratch-off purchase, record results (win/loss/pending), and see analytics on your spending patterns, win rate, and net profit or loss over time. All plans include Ledger access.

Question 11

Is this a guarantee that I'll win?

Accepted Answer

No. Scratch-off tickets are a form of gambling, and the house always has an edge. Our data helps you make more informed choices by identifying which games offer relatively better value, but no strategy can guarantee a win. Please play responsibly.
